Gun Control: The Second Amendment Was Not Written For Hunting or Sport

HThe website motherjones.com has a guide to mass shootings in the United States of America, offering a glimpse into the shooting incidents, their location, the victims and the shooters themselves. The website offers statistic on the locations of the shootings, the weapons that were used, and whether they were obtained legally or illegally.

According to the website motherjones.com, “Since 1982, there have been at least 62 mass shootings* across the country, with the killings unfolding in 30 states from Massachusetts to Hawaii. Twenty-five of these mass shootings have occurred since 2006, and seven of them took place in 2012.”

I lead off with the issue around mass shootings because they have occurred in our country and have been featured heavily in the news media after they occur. No one event is ever the same. The victims and suspects are all uniquely different regardless of the similarities between them. The one thing that they all have in common is that everyone; the guilty and the guiltless, are all human.

The commonality that also always extends from these incidents is the discussion of gun control and gun law, which are two separate issues, often grouped as one thing. What generally happens is that the issue of gun control and gun law become apart of the national political stage. Government officials from local to federal government weigh in, special interest groups like the National Rifle Association and their opponents weigh in to get legislation moved or un-moved in their favor.

The latest mass shooting that occurred in our country that has lit the spark to this ageless debate was the Gun Control 2Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newton, Connecticut. This shooting was similar to the others in that it featured a lone or “possibly” multiple gunmen and of course victims of that individual’s violent rampage. What was drastically different from this killing spree than others in recent memory was that the victims were mostly children in the first grade, at the tender age of six. Their innocence is unmistakable and there is nothing in the mind of any rational individual that says this was right, no big deal, or acceptable. We’d all say that who ever was responsible should be prosecuted and punished to the full extent of the law (barring the killing of themselves as Adam Lanza did on the day of the incident). That is my stance on it, as I work with children 6-18 years of age on a daily basis and know that their lives are precious. Precious to our society, and most certainly to the people who love and care for them.

I entitled this post, Gun Control: The Second Amendment Was Not For Hunting for three reasons. The first reason is The Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution [which] is the part of the United States Bill of Rights that protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. The second reason is the incidence of murder that occurs every year in my country, The United States of America. The last reason is to remind everyone of the human condition and how people have behaved violently throughout history.

The amendment reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Essentially the second amendment comes from very old ideas of the fear of a corrupted government, that the newly forming government could quickly become corrupt, and that citizens should be able to overthrow their corrupt government. The other party believed as Noah Webster did that,”Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe.” The compromise was the second amendment. You can read more about the forming of the  amendment here.

So I write reason one above about the second amendment to remind people that the amendment has nothing to do with hunting or sport shooting, which often comes up as a topic of discussion revolving around gun control. The second amendment of the US Constitution contained in the Bill of Rights was not written as a hunting or sport-shooting measure. It was a fierce ideology of the men who wanted to establish a free state where the people had a voice and say in the due process and laws of their society. It was put in place as part of the balancing of power and the reason why the United States of America has no king; and why there is on the books a separation of church and state, freedom of press, and the right to assemble peacefully in defiance of government.

Gun Control 3The second reason is to remind everyone of the culture of violence that plagues this country year after year. I live and grew up in Newark, NJ. In 1996, Time Magazine ranked Newark the most dangerous city in the country. Last year in 2012 there were 115 murders in Essex County (21 cities). 92 of those murdered occurred in the city of Newark. Many people know well of the negative reputation of the city of Newark, NJ. But Newark, is no isolated city in the United States with a high murder rate and a crime problem. Newark itself, and the state of New Jersey have very strict gun laws.

This is not the only source I’ve used, but if you go to the website disastercenter.com, you can see that they have been tracking crime rates in the United States since at least 1960 up through 2011, and I’m sure they will report on data once the FBI releases the numbers for 2012 as cities across the country submit their reports. But if you take a look at the list, you can see that between 1960 – 2011 the lowest tally of murders in the USA was 8,530 in 1962 and the highest tally was 24,700 in 1991. I took these numbers and plugged them into an excel spreadsheet, divided them by the 52 years of data and came out with an average number of murders per year across the country of 17,480. That’s a very high number when you consider that the United States is a developed country and still considered to be the wealthiest nation on the whole of the Earth.

The final question is if we have a gun problem, or do we have a people problem. Some states like California, Illinois, and New Jersey have very strict gun laws, requiring many steps for people to legally acquire guns. In some cases, people feel that it is a waste of time to even try because of the headache and long wait. Yet, cities like Compton, Chicago, and Newark still see high murder rates. I am of the mind that people kill people and guns are simply a means to an end. History can tell many stories of mass murder and war from Hitler, to the imperial might of Ancient Rome, and the conquests of Alexander the Great. And war may be viewed very differently, from a theoretically perspective, but regardless of the weapons; many people are killed. Further, like these mass shootings, war is a planned act to willfully, within one’s right mind, to mortally wound another human being. Murder is the same, it is not murder unless it was willfully intended by an individual within their right mind.

This debate will rage on now, and most likely long after I’m dead. But what I’d like to see is a departure from the second amendment being looked at as if it were intended for sports and recreation to hunt and catch game. If it were, then we should restrict all possession of guns, because a bow and arrow have long proven to be an effective means in more than one culture to put down deer and other large game. Cows are slaughtered with machetes, pigs are gutted with knives down the belly, fish are hauled in nets, and chickens gets their necks cut with meat cleavers. Gun law and gun control has everything to do with the culture of our society.

Until next write…

Days Before Danger 90.1

VanishThere are approximately 11 days left until the release of The Twelve, and I have to say that I’m excited. In the wake of writing, sleepless nights editing , and a girl I’ll never want to take out in Hurricane Sandy again; along with trying to pull everything together for the release, hoping to design a half decent website at dangerkidsuniverse.com, I’ve missed my 12 day increments in writing Days Before Danger. Now that me and De’Quan Foster are in the last stages of production, I had a moment of pause to sit down and finally write another post on my blog that has had very little of my attention. Sorry Fiction and Folly, I still love you, but I’ve been loving The Twelve a whole lot more.

Today, and most of tomorrow, we’ll be reading through yet again, to make sure that all the T’s are crossed, all the I’s are dotted, and all the periods, commas, semicolons, and words are in the right place for the release. Fingers crossed for no hiccups on #12/12/12. The cover of the book was posted early this morning on Twitter @dkuniverse, so we hope you have a chance to take a look at it. The final edits were completed yesterday and we think we’ve got something you’ll like thanks to our pal and cover artist Elizabeth Douglas.

Running on 4 hours of sleep was not at all fun from a physical standpoint, but quite fulfilling from a creative standpoint. I did manage to see Skyfall with De’Quan Foster, which we both thought was pretty amazing. If you haven’t seen it, check it out. It’s worth the cash for a chair in the theatre.

I also picked up the lastest release, Red Country, from my favorite author Joe Abercrombie, which will be the first book I’ll read on my two month break from writing after The Twelve releases. If you enjoy gritty, in your face fantasy as much as I do, you’ll want to check out some of Joe’s stuff, he rocks.

Lastly, I can’t wait to listen to Rihanna’s new album, Unapologetic, which I picked up on a run to Target about a week ago. I know I’m late on this one, but like my teachers always said, better late than never. *Smiles* So we here at Team Danger Kids hope you stay tuned for The Twelve set for release on December 12, 2012. We hope that you love reading it as much as we’ve loved writing it. And remember, you can always contact us at info@dangerkidsuniverse.com, to leave a comment or ask us a question concerning Danger Kids. This is A.S. Washington signing off.

Days Before Danger, Day 48.1

This is just my third Days Before Danger post, but this Sunday, October 21, 2012 will mark the day that the eighth chapter of The Twelve will be posted on dangerkidsuniverse.comAfter which, chapter nine will be released on November 4, 2012 and then finally chapter ten will be released on November 18, 2012. At that moment, there’ll be just twenty-four more days left until the release of The Twelve. On December 12, 2012, the first step in the journey of the Danger Kids Universe will have been completed. Those of you who have supported us until now will have the opportunity to find out what happens to the characters you’ve met and a few that you haven’t. You’ll be in the know as much as we are about The Twelve, and that will be awesome. I’ll be happy to hear what people think of the entire book and whether we did a good job or not. That’s always really a fun part of the process of writing. While most writers are often times their biggest critics, they have to think highly enough of their writing ability, stories, or characters to be brave enough to share it with the world. I mean, the worlds that we have constructed here with The Twelve and Dangers Kids are just a fraction of the wacky things that go on in my brain and that of my co-author De’Quan Fosteras well as our buddy Eric Cooper.

With fifty-two days remaining until launch of the first book in the Danger Kids Universe, I can honestly say that there is nothing I’d rather be doing at the moment. It took me nearly twenty-five years to realize that writing was my passion in life. When I was growing up I wanted to be a car salesman, a video game maker (I still want to do that), an investment banker (I buy stocks), and just plain old rich. Who doesn’t want to drive a Lamborghini right? Maybe my dream car isn’t your dream car, but I’m pretty sure you’ve got one. Or a place you’d like to visit, or a wild and crazy thing you want to do. Money sure helps, and puts opportunities in reach. However, today I know that I’ll be writing until I die, whether it brings me two-hundred dollars or two-hundred million dollars. And while I have dozens of other interests, there is nothing I would put ahead of being able to sit down, develop characters, craft a plot, and write a story.

So for those of you who are on this ride with us and enjoying it, I thank you for being around to give us some of your energy to keep pushing along. I hope that you’re out there enjoying life and living your passion to the fullest. If not, it’s never too late to get started. Cliches are old, cliches are redundant, cliches are very much boring. But cliches are very much often true. Some aspects of Danger Kids is like a job. We’ve got to reedit, make sure the words are spelled right on the cover, order proofs, set a reasonable price and all that jazz. But no day in the Danger Kids Universe is like going to work. I welcome it with open arms and get to take a lot more days off :)

If you’re with us, keep up to date with us by following us @dkuniverse. Get a daily dose of Days Before Danger by De’Quan Foster on our Tumblr page. And most certainly like us on Facebook. This is A.S. Washington signing off. I’ll see you again for Days Before Danger, Day 60.1, just twelve days from now.

Days Before Danger, Day 36.1

Today, the seventh chapter of The Twelve scheduled for release on December 12, 2012 was posted on dangerkidsuniverse.com. We are more than a third of the way through until release and each day gets more and more exciting. I spoke with my co-writer De’Quan Foster every day this week and we talked a lot about successful franchises and what made people gravitate to stories like Harry Potter and Twilight. For us, in the case of Harry, it was his being an orphan, the black sheep of the family, having pressure to succeed, and simply being young and trying to find out who he was, was what drew us to Harry. Even if you couldn’t directly relate to each one of the things Harry had to deal with, you could at the very least sympathize with them all and understand the difficulty of his existence. With regard to Twilight, it was Bella and Edward’s love that drew so many women of all ages in. Even the most beautiful girls feel awkward and sometimes inadequate, not deserving of something special. That was Bella, seemingly out of place in the world; and she happens to be the only girl the most attractive boy in school is interested in. Edward, outwardly is everything any boy wants to be and what every girl wants, but even he is fighting strong feelings inside that are often only shared with closest of friends and lovers. Not to mention that everyone is in some way or another looking for love.

With The Twelve, we’ve been challenged with the task of making gods relatable. Of adding the human element so that characters like Thutmos and Black Dawn don’t seem so out of touch with what happens to you and I on a daily basis. That has been the fun part of this entire journey for me. Trying to figure out what they should say; when, how and why. Up until this point, I’ve been hearing that people really like Scicremeon and Black Dawn and that makes me happy. Each of them is dealing with a great deal of emotions that are difficult to suppress. It’ll be interesting to see the reaction to these characters as the story continues to unfold.

Outside of the Danger Kids Universe I’ve been nursing a sprained ankle that I suffered in a pick up basketball game Tuesday evening. People have made their jokes as I limped around the work place Friday saying I’m getting old or calling me the old man. For one, I’ll have them know that I was handling myself quite well on the court against a few youngsters; and I am only in this condition because I didn’t follow good equipment guidelines of playing basketball in hi-tops, rather than low-top tennis shoes. Lesson relearned. Yet, within their jokes and warnings that have gone unheeded is the constant reminder that you’re only as old as you believe you are, and that you shouldn’t live life in fear of inconvenient things happening. Sometimes things will happen that are out of your control and opportunities for greatness happen few times in a life time. Therefore I must carpe diem, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.

This is A.S. Washington signing off.

Days Before Danger, Day 24.1

Danger Kids creator De’Quan Foster on his Tumblr Blog has written his daily blog entitled Days Before Danger for the 24th day in a row, as he continues to countdown to the release of our novel, The Twelve. The Twelve will be the first book released in the Danger Kids Universe. It is a sequel that precedes the main Danger Kids series which will span ten novels.

As we began the journey of bringing The Twelve to life; Foster said that I should write a blog about Danger Kids and I promised that I would. So here I am, many more days after that conversation which adds up to far more days than the twenty-four of Days Before Danger.

I’ve always wanted to write in the science fiction and fantasy genre, but my first published book ended up being a romance-suspense-thriller entitled The Virgin Surgeon; after putting aside two science fiction and fantasy novels that I still plan on writing. However, thanks to people like Cassandra Clare, J.K. Rowling, and my all time favorite, Joe Abercrombie; I was able to absorb thousands of pages of science fiction and fantasy for the better part of a decade. Yeah, I read all four Twilight books too.

Today, yesterday and a great many months before, I’ve been immersed in what too has become my own science fiction and fantasy world, the world created by DeQuan Foster, Danger Kids Universe. The most exciting thing about writing The Twelve is falling in love with a myriad of characters that I’ve created for the story many moons before putting fingers to keyboard to construct the story. Interestingly enough, one of my favorite characters to write in The Twelve is Scicremeon, a character created by Foster who I have had the privilege to develop. She is everything you want in a woman. Beautiful, headstrong, can beat the crap out of any guy, yet she still has a loving heart every once in a blue moon, for less than a handful of people. So yeah guys, that’s probably the girl you want to be your best friend and not your wife.

As my lunch break comes to a close, I get to ruminate on how I’ll begin the next chapter after finishing one early this morning around 11am. Right now as I write these words, I sit with Foster in my office going over a few things for The Twelve and book five; go figure. There is a lot of words already down, but so many not ready for publication. Hope you enjoy the ride with us and keep reading the story and give us your opinion. You can read the first six chapters of The Twelve on dangerkidsuniverse.com. “Before the world ends, find out how it all began.” #121212.

Sonnen Didn’t Earn A Shot At Jon Jones, Good Choice “Bones”

Sure, Chael Sonnen ran his mouth and created some hype behind an eventual match up between himself and Jon “Bones Jones. But, he just came off of a loss in a championship match with Anderson “The Spider” Silva at UFC 148 and in the UFC, after a guy’s lost two straight championship matches in a row, he usually doesn’t get another shot at the title for a couple years. So I give Jon “Bones” Jones a thumbs up for declining the offer as Sonnen for a replacement for the injured Dan Henderson.

Dana White is an intelligent businessman for sure, because I would have likely done the same thing in this situation. There was some buzz created around the fight by Chael’s trash talk in this video and Jones’ twitter response. So with Dan Henderson being injured and out of commission, people would have drop the $60 bucks to tune in to see Sonnen make good on calling Jones a punk kid, or Jones wiping the floor with Sonnen as he’s done with all of his opponents to date.

Some people want to say that Jones is scared. Well that’s a joke and rather naive to say considering he was preparing for Henderson and likely didn’t watch much tape of Sonnen. Also, if he’s like some fighters who don’t watch tape, his training partners and coaches were geared up and making a plan to fight Henderson. There is much more preparation that goes into combat-sports than what goes into real life combat because its against 1 opponent and there is no help from the man next to you (not downplaying military training or engagements in any way, not stupid). It’s one on one, not 10000 on 1000;, this is not war in ancient times. Not only is it a sport, but its also business; and in business you don’t make emotional decisions, even in the fight game. Even Anderson Silva, who was toting a middleweight championship at the time didn’t get an immediate title shot when he moved up in weight. So why should Chael after coming off of a humiliating performance against Anderson Silva in their second go at it, get an immediate shot at another champion, especially one as popular as Jones.

Lastly, there are other light heavyweights who’ve been fighting and working their butts off who should have first crack at Jones (not thrilled about a Machida rematch); rather than a guy who used an on air opportunity to get under Jones’ skin so people would forget he just got his ass handed to him in less than two rounds. Sure, it might sell tickets, but that doesn’t mean its an earned opportunity; all his hard training aside. Thus this is no knock to Sonnen as a fighter, he’s damned good, could likely give Jones trouble, and would most likely assuredly whip my ass. Regardless of those opinions, he does not deserve at shot at the light heavyweight title at UFC 151. So as much as I had prepared to order the event, it is canceled and we’ll have to wait for the next card.

Until next write…

Black People: A Poem From “The Musings of My Epic Mind”

Yesterday I ordered the proof of my first collection of poetry The Musings of My Epic MindThis book is the first poetry milestone in my writing career and the second after having published my first novel The Virgin Surgeon in December of 2011.

This particular poem was inspired by both a mild-loathing and love for the socially constructed “race” of people called black people that I am apart of. As well as from my conversations with people, especially a young man that I have mentored for the past 7 years, De’Quan Foster. I hope that you enjoy, but take from it what you will, such is the way of poems. The writing of this poem was also partly inspired by Emily Frankel’s article entitled Prejudice on her blog; as it pushed my hand to write. The article was very enjoyable for me because of the honesty with which it was written. That is something that I can always count on Em for on her blog and in the emails we share. You can surely read about her on her website but for a little background, Em is a dancer and writer of some acclaim. She is also the wife of actor John Cullum and the mother of actor JD Cullum who you may have seen on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and Wizards of Waverly Place respectively.

Black People

Often times they are hated in my brain
Ill tempered people quite uncouth
I see them without brakes, a running train

From idiocy and ignorance, they should refrain
Ever weary of words that pass the tooth
For in study the world can be gained

Reparations are a waste, thus forget the claim
Grab your coin of luck, call success in your booth
Since it cannot be erased, that old stain

Let it remain only as a memory on old plains
For the natives suffered as much in truth
It is for them to flush their crap down the drain

For they are all dead, nothing but books explain
The tyranny of those boats and those troops
Hold fast to education subdue anger and disdain
Greater things will come, blood is strong in your veins

Until next write…
